Chapter 2: The Woman With the Phone

Part 2 ⬇️

The paramedics arrived before Preston could say another word.

Two of them moved straight to Sophie.

The moment the first one knelt beside her and shone a small light into her eyes, I heard a woman near the back of the room start to cry.

Not my mother.

A stranger.

Sophie was still conscious.

Still holding my hand.

But her grip was weak, and that terrified me more than anything Preston had ever said or done.

They lifted her onto a stretcher.

That's when the hotel's head of security walked in.

He didn't look at the guests.

He didn't look at Preston.

He walked directly to the ballroom manager and said four words loud enough for the front tables to hear.

"We need to talk.

Now."

Preston stepped forward.

"Whatever you think you saw on that camera—"

The security manager looked at him for the first time.

"Sir.

I'd strongly suggest you stop talking."

Preston's face went white.

My mother grabbed his arm.

"Don't say anything," she whispered.

"Not one word."

But it was already too late.

Because standing quietly near the ballroom entrance was a woman I didn't recognize.

She was holding a phone.

Screen facing outward.

She had recorded everything.

And she was already on a call.

I heard two words before the doors swung shut behind the stretcher.

"Yes, officer."

I looked back at Preston one last time.

He was staring at that stranger like he'd seen a ghost.
