Chapter 2: Everything I Paid For

PART 2 ⬇️
The next morning, I arrived at 8 a.m.
sharp with two moving trucks and my binder.
Daniel opened the door in his pajamas.
His face dropped the moment he saw the trucks parked behind me.
"What is this?"
I held up the binder.
"This is every receipt, every bank transfer, every invoice for everything inside this house that I paid for.

The furniture.
The kitchen.
The bathrooms.

Margaret appeared at the top of the stairs, still in her robe.

The first mover was already at the door with a dolly.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Emily.
Stop.
We can talk about this."
"You had your chance to talk yesterday.
You chose your cigarette instead."
He lowered his voice, almost shaking.
"My mother…
she told me something last night.
About why she really did it."
I paused.
"What do you mean?"
He glanced back at Margaret, who had gone completely still on the stairs.
"There's something about this house you don't know.
Something she's been hiding for a long time."
---
What secret has Margaret been hiding — and why did she really lock that gate?
The full truth is more shocking than anyone expected.
