Chapter 2: The Paper on the Table
Vanessa's pale face lasted only a second.
Then her expression hardened.
"You don't know anything," she said quietly.
"You're just trying to make me look bad in front of everyone."
But Sophie's father didn't back down.
"I know about Richard," he said.
"I know what happened to him.
And I know why you left that town so fast."
The room went completely silent.
Sophie was still trembling against his chest, her small hands gripping his shirt.
Vanessa took one step forward.
"That little girl is manipulating you.
She's been doing it for months.
You just can't see it because you feel guilty about the divorce."
"She's seven years old, Vanessa."
"Old enough to lie."
Something shifted in his eyes then.
Not anger.
Something colder.
He reached into his jacket pocket and placed a folded piece of paper on the table between them.
Vanessa looked down at it.
Her hands started to shake.
"Where did you get that?" she whispered.
He didn't answer.
Sophie looked up at her daddy's face and then back at the paper.
Whatever was written on it — Vanessa had never wanted anyone to find it.
And now it was sitting right there in the open.
