Chapter 2: She Was Already at the Door

Part 2 ⬇️
Christmas Eve arrived cold and clear.
I was already seated when Ryan walked in.
He didn't see me at first.
He was too busy scanning the room — looking for her, I realized.
His eyes moved past the crowded tables, past his mother, past his sister, past twenty-eight people who knew his face on his wedding day.
Then he saw me.
I smiled and gave a small wave.
He went completely still.
The hostess touched his arm.
"Sir?
The Parker party is just this way."
He followed her in a daze — straight to the window booth.
His booth.
Our family filled every table around it.
His mother was two seats away.
My brother was directly behind him.
And the booth was empty.
He sat down slowly, like a man trying to remember how to breathe.
I leaned across the table.
"You look tired, Ryan.
Long shift?"
He said nothing.
Then his phone lit up on the table between us.
A message.
One line.
I'm outside.
Which entrance?
He snatched the phone before I could read the name.
But I had already seen the first letter.
T.
She was here.
She was walking through that door right now.
And so was everyone who loved us.

What Emily did next — and what "T" said when she saw the room full of family — left everyone speechless.
