Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Elena's hands were shaking, but her voice was steady.
She had known this moment might come.
She just hadn't expected Julian to be standing on the wrong side of it.
Victoria stepped closer.
"You see?
She's stalling.
That's what guilty people do."
Julian said nothing.
He didn't even look at his wife.
Elena turned to face him.
"Julian.
Look at me."
He looked at the floor instead.
That was when Elena understood.
This wasn't just Victoria causing trouble.
Julian had known.
He had known, and he had let it happen anyway.
The front door opened before anyone could speak again.
Three men in suits walked in.
Behind them — Elena's father, calm and unhurried, holding a sealed envelope.
Victoria's expression shifted.
Just slightly.
But enough.
"What is this?" she said.
Elena's father looked at her for a long moment.
"This," he said quietly, "is what happens when you search the wrong woman."
He placed the envelope on the table between them.
No one moved.
Victoria's eyes dropped to it.
Then back up.
Her hands, Elena noticed, had stopped moving entirely.
Whatever was inside that envelope — Victoria already knew what it was.
---
What's inside that envelope — and why does Victoria look like she's seen a ghost?
