I stared at that email for a long time.
The reservation was under my name.
My email.
My phone number as the contact.
I had booked it four months ago because Mom had asked me to "just handle it." Sixty-five dollars per person.
Fourteen guests.
A private dining room with a deposit I had paid myself.
I hadn't been reimbursed.
I picked up the phone and called the restaurant.
"I need to remove myself as the event coordinator," I told them.
"I'll be transferring responsibility to the account holder."
"Of course.
And the outstanding balance — shall we move that to the new contact as well?"
"Yes.
All of it."
I sent Mom a single message.
*"The restaurant will be calling you about the birthday dinner.
Everything is transferred to your name now.
You have until Friday to confirm the menu."*
She called me within four minutes.
"Sarah, you cannot do this three weeks before my birthday."
"I just did."
"There are fourteen people coming.
Your aunts.
Your cousins.
People who traveled—"
"Then you have plenty of time to handle it."
There was a long pause.
Then her voice shifted.
Quieter.
Almost careful.
"Your grandmother's ring," she said slowly.
"The one I've been holding for you.
I think it's time we talked about that."
I went completely still.
She had never once mentioned that ring in three years.
