Chapter 2: The Call I Didn't Expect

Part 2 ⬇️
I stayed completely calm.
"Harold, what's wrong?
I just left you a little something to make your morning drive more comfortable."
"You know exactly what you did!" he snapped.
"How could you embarrass me like this?
Adele is mortified.
My boss saw everything.
Everyone is talking."
I let the silence sit for a moment.
"Funny," I said.
"You had no problem embarrassing me every single morning — hobbling around on crutches, begging neighbors for help, while you drove across town to pick her up.
But now that you're uncomfortable, it's suddenly a big deal?"
He hung up.
Twenty minutes later, my phone buzzed again.
This time it wasn't Harold.
It was Adele.
"I think we need to talk," she said quietly.
"There are some things about Harold that you don't know.
Things I should have told you a long time ago."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What things?" I asked.
She paused.
"Not over the phone.
Can we meet?"
I stood there in my kitchen, balancing on my crutches, heart pounding.
Whatever Harold was hiding — Adele knew.
And she was ready to talk.
