Chapter 2: The Man With the Notebook

Adrian picked up his fork but didn't touch the pie.

"Emma," he said carefully, "how did you know which table I always sit at?"

She pointed at the window without looking up from her crayon.

"Because that's where the man with the notebook always sits first.

To check."

The fork lowered slowly.

"What man?"

"The one who comes before you.

Every time." She selected a red crayon.

"He sits there for a few minutes, then leaves.

Then you come."

Adrian's eyes moved to Lucas, who was standing outside by the car.

Lucas, who always arrived ten minutes early to "secure the route."

Lucas, who had been with him for six years.

Lucas, who was the only person who knew Adrian's schedule in advance.

Sophia appeared with the coffee pot and caught Adrian's expression.

She had seen enough difficult men to recognize when something had shifted behind someone's eyes.

"Is everything alright?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He was already reaching for his phone.

The call connected in two rings.

"Pull the logs from last Tuesday," he said quietly.

"Every call made from inside this building before I arrived."

A pause on the other end.

Then: "Boss…

are you sure?"

The wrong answer.

Adrian set the phone face-down on the table.

Emma was still coloring.

She had no idea what she had just done.
