Chapter 2: What They Took From Her

**PART 2**
Genevieve couldn't stop shaking.
"They needed a match," she whispered.
"A compatible donor.
That's why they adopted me."
Julian turned slowly.
"What are you saying?"
"I was seven years old." Her voice broke.
"Chloe was sick.
Her kidneys were failing.
Arthur found me through an agency — not because they wanted a daughter.
Because my tissue type was a match for hers."
The room went completely still.
"They had me operated on when I was eight.
Then again at eleven." She pressed her hand flat against her side.
"Arthur signed every consent form himself.
He told me it was to save my life.
I didn't find out the truth until I was nineteen."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"And your body—"
"Three surgeries.
Two organs." Her eyes met his.
"Chloe is alive and healthy and standing downstairs in a designer dress right now because of what they took from me."
Julian moved toward the door.
"Julian, don't—" Genevieve reached for his arm.
"They're still down there," he said quietly.
"Arthur.
Chloe.
All of them.
Smiling.
Drinking.
Celebrating."
His hand rested on the door handle.
Then his phone buzzed on the nightstand.
He glanced at the screen — and froze.
It was a message from Beatrice, his stepmother.
*"Julian.
Stop.
There is something about that girl you don't know yet.
Do NOT confront Arthur tonight.
Call me now."*
