Chapter 1: The Night She Showed Her Hand

We finally paid off our mortgage, and my MIL immediately said, "Finally.

Now I can start making this house my own" — what I did the next morning made her rush to my husband, screaming, "You have to stop her!

Make her take it back!"

My husband and I had been together for thirteen years, and shortly after we got married, we bought our first house.

Paying off the mortgage became one of our biggest goals.

Over the years, we welcomed two wonderful children and built a happy life there, but a few years ago, everything became much harder when my husband's company lost several major clients and laid off his entire department.

He spent months searching for another job, while every mortgage payment became a new source of stress.

Eventually, since I was earning more, we agreed that he'd stay home with the kids while I worked extra hours.

Around that time, his mother, Camila, started visiting more often, supposedly to help him.

She'd never been particularly warm toward me, but soon her comments became impossible to ignore.

"This house would look so much better if someone actually knew how to take care of it," she'd say, or she'd step into the kitchen and sigh, "I don't understand how you let things get like this."

Her words stung, but I kept quiet because our family was already under enough pressure.

Eventually, things improved, and after years of sacrifice, we finally made our last mortgage payment.

We were so relieved that we invited the family over for a celebratory dinner.

When we shared the news, Camila raised her glass and smiled.

"Finally.

Now I can start making this house my own."

I stared at her, certain I'd misunderstood.

Then I looked at my husband, expecting him to correct her, but he simply glanced at his mother and smiled.

That hurt more than her words.

I barely spoke for the rest of the evening.

Long after everyone left, I kept replaying Camila's comments, her constant opinions about our home, and my husband's reaction.

Suddenly, all those little moments started to feel very different.

By morning, I'd made a decision.

The next day, Camila came rushing into our house, went straight to my husband, and shouted,

"You have to stop her!

Make her take it back!"
