Chapter 2: These Are the Ones

Part 2 ⬇️
---
The foster mother's voice dropped low, like she was afraid someone might hear her.
"Jace researched you," she said.
"Both of you.
For months."
I gripped the phone tighter.
"What do you mean he researched us?"
"He went through every family the agency suggested.
He turned them down before they could turn him down.
He was looking for something specific — and when he found your names, he told Josie, 'These are the ones.'"
My legs felt weak.
I sat down slowly.
"But why us?" I whispered.
"We're not wealthy.
We're not special."
She paused for a long moment.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out how to tell you."
Before she could say another word, I heard the front door open behind me.
Jace walked in, school bag over one shoulder — and the second he saw my face, he stopped completely still.
He looked at the phone in my hand.
Something crossed his expression.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Something that looked almost like relief.
"Jace," I said quietly.
"Who are we to you?"
He set his bag down slowly.
And when he finally looked up at me, his eyes were filled with something he had clearly been carrying for a very long time.
