Chapter 2: She Didn't Try to Smile

His hands were shaking so hard he nearly dropped the notebook.
"What is this?" he said.
His voice was quiet.
That was the worst part.
Not shouting.
Just quiet.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, I can explain—"
"You forged signatures." He turned the page.
"You wrote dates.
You built a case against a six-year-old boy." He looked up.
"Your own stepson."
"He has problems, Daniel.
Real problems.
I was trying to get him help—"
"Stop."
Ethan was still under the staircase.
Daniel walked over and crouched down.
The boy flinched before he even touched him.
That flinch said everything.
Daniel carried him to the couch and sat beside him.
Then he pulled out his phone and called his brother.
Vanessa watched.
Her face had changed.
The warmth was gone.
What was underneath was something colder.
"You're making a mistake," she said softly.
Daniel didn't answer.
Then Ethan tugged his sleeve.
"Daddy," he whispered.
"She has another book.
In her room.
She said that one was just in case."
The room went completely still.
Daniel stood up slowly and looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at him — and for the first time, she didn't try to smile.
