Chapter 9: The Morning Everything Shifted

Graham's cooperation changed the shape of everything.

He gave Clare a signed statement confirming that Vanessa had directed him to engage Holloway, that she had provided him with the incident reports he had believed were factual, and that he had signed documents prepared by Holloway's office without reading them in full.

He was precise and unflinching, and he didn't ask Clare to soften anything.

Clare filed the complaint with the Solicitors Regulation Authority on a Wednesday morning.

By Thursday afternoon, Holloway's firm had been formally notified.

Vanessa found out on Friday.

She called Naomi directly.

Naomi let it ring twice, then answered and put it on speaker.

Clare had told her to do exactly that if Vanessa made contact.

"You went to the SRA." Vanessa's voice was controlled.

Barely.

"I did."

"Do you have any idea what you've done?

You've just destroyed a man's career over a misunderstanding."

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Vanessa.

I have the recordings.

I have the messages.

I have Renata."

A silence.

"Renata," Vanessa said.

The name came out flat, like something she'd hoped had stayed buried.

"She kept everything.

Three years of documentation.

Same method, same lawyer, same language in the messages." Naomi kept her voice even.

"The SRA has all of it."

"This is about the ballroom." Vanessa's voice shifted — harder now, the control starting to slip at the edges.

"This has always been about the ballroom.

You have never forgiven me for one moment, one day, and you have spent years trying to—"

"This is about Maisie," Naomi said.

"It has only ever been about Maisie."

"She was going to be *mine*." The words came out before Vanessa could stop them.

Raw and sudden, like something that had been pressed behind a door for too long.

"I was going to give her everything.

A real home, a real family, two parents who were actually—"

"She has a mother," Naomi said.

"She has always had a mother."

The line went quiet.

"You won't win this," Vanessa said.

The control was back, but thinner now.

"Graham will come back to me.

He always does.

And when he does—"

"Graham gave Clare a signed statement yesterday," Naomi said.

"In full.

Everything."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"I want you to hear something," Naomi said.

She reached across the table and pressed play on Eleanor's recorder, holding it close to the phone speaker.

*He will be.

He just needs a little more time to see what I've been showing him.*

Vanessa's own voice, unhurried and certain, filling the kitchen.

Naomi stopped the recording.

"The SRA hearing is in six weeks," she said.

"I'd suggest you speak to a solicitor.

Not Holloway."

She ended the call.

Her hands were steady.

She noticed that again, the same way she had the first time she'd heard the recording — that stillness in her own body that she hadn't expected to find there.

She picked up her phone and texted Eleanor: *It's done.

She knows.*

Eleanor's reply came back in under a minute.

*Good.

Come for Sunday dinner.

May you like

Bring Maisie.

I'll make the lamb.*
