Chapter 2: The One Who Stepped Back

Part 2 ⬇️
Frank moved first.
His hand caught Emily's wrist before she could touch Noah.
"Don't." His voice was low and final.
Emily didn't flinch.
She looked straight at him.
"Let go of me.
Right now.
Or that baby d!es in the next sixty seconds."
Frank looked at me.
I looked at Noah.
The monitor was still flat.
"Let her go," I said.
Emily pulled free, turned back to Noah, and did something none of the paramedics had done.
She didn't reach for the oxygen.
She didn't check his pulse.
She grabbed the edge of the blanket twisted beneath his left shoulder — and pulled it away completely.
Then she pressed two fingers against the side of his neck.
Not his wrist.
Not his chest.
"He's not cardiac," she said.
"He's blocking.
The heat in this room is making it worse."
The lead medic stared at her.
"That's not—"
"Open the window," Emily said.
"Now."
Nobody moved.
She turned around and looked at every person in that room.
"I said open the window!"
Frank crossed the room and shoved it open.
Cold Atlantic air rushed in.
Emily leaned close to Noah's face.
Her hands were steady.
Her voice dropped to almost nothing.
"Come on, baby.
Come on."
Then Margaret Collins made a sound from the doorway.
Not a sob.
Something different.
A sharp, strangled gasp — like someone who had just realized they had made a terrible mistake.
I turned to look at her.
And Margaret took one step backward into the hallway.
---
What did Margaret just realize?

The truth behind that night is darker than anyone expected.
