Chapter 2: The Woman With the Folder

I did not move toward the altar.

I stood at the chapel entrance, Emily still holding my collar, and looked at Rebecca walking toward me in that white gown.

She reached out her hand.

"Come on, darling.

Everyone is watching."

"I know," I said.

"That's why I'm going to read this out loud."

Her smile finally broke.

"Don't," she whispered.

"Not here."

But I had already unfolded the note.

The priest cleared his throat.

A guest near the front leaned forward.

My mother, seated in the second row, stood up slowly without being asked.

I read every word.

The chapel went completely silent.

Then Rebecca did something I did not expect.

She laughed.

"You're making a scene over a child's misunderstanding," she said, loud enough for the front rows to hear.

"Emily is sensitive.

She gets confused.

You know that."

Emily buried her face against my shoulder.

That was when the door behind us opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Someone I had never seen before.

She was holding a folder.

And she walked straight toward Rebecca.

"I think," the woman said quietly, "you'll want to hear what I found before this goes any further."

Rebecca's face went white.
