I picked up the folder and held it against my chest.
"Douglas," I said, "you just called this Carter's house."
He shrugged.
"Well.
Eventually."
"No," I said.
"Not eventually.
Not ever — the way you mean it."
I opened the folder and set the top page on the table where all of them could see it.
It was the amendment.
Signed.
Notarized.
Dated the morning before they arrived with their suitcases.
The room went completely still.
Carter stepped forward and read the first line.
His face didn't recover.
It went from white to something worse — the look of a man realizing the rescue he had been waiting for was not coming.
Kendall snatched the page from the table.
Her eyes moved fast.
Then she looked up at me.
"You changed the trust."
"I did."
"You can't just—"
"I already did.
My attorney will confirm it if you'd like to call her."
Rita made a sound from the staircase.
Douglas stopped pointing at things.
Then Kendall said something I had not expected.
Not an argument.
Not a threat about the children this time.
She said a name.
A name I had not heard in eleven years.
And Carter's hand came down hard on the banister his father had built.
