Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

**PART 2**
Julian's face went white.
Not pale.
White.
Eleanor stepped closer to see what he was looking at.
Then her hand went to her mouth.
The document on top was the property deed.
Julian's signature was right there at the bottom — next to a clause he had clearly never read.
The clause that stated the property was held solely in my name through the holding company, and that no transfer, sale, or claim could be made without my written consent.
"This isn't right," Julian said.
His voice had dropped to almost nothing.
"This can't be right."
Darcy didn't move.
"It's been right for three years."
Eleanor turned to Julian.
"You told me she couldn't do anything.
You told me the house was yours."
"It was supposed to be—"
"It was never yours," I said.
"You signed the paperwork.
You just never read it."
Julian looked at me the way someone looks when the ground has disappeared beneath them.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen — and something shifted in his face.
Something that looked less like shock and more like fear.
He turned the screen away before I could see the name.
But Darcy had already seen it.
She looked at me and said quietly, "Sloan.
There's one more thing you need to know."
