Every head in that room turned toward Silas.

He wasn't looking at the bride.

He wasn't looking at his son.

He was looking straight at me, and his eyes were filling with something I couldn't name.

"You were at Mercy General," he said.

"Two years ago.

My breath stopped.

I remembered that night.

My father's face had gone pale.

My stepmother set her glass down very slowly.

And then Silas reached into his jacket pocket and placed something on the table.

An envelope.

He slid it toward me across the white linen.

"I made a promise that night," he said quietly.

"And I keep my promises."
