Chapter 2: Her Silence Was the Loudest Thing in the Room

Part 2 ⬇️
The elderly man's hands were trembling.
He held the second photograph under the light, and his voice came out barely above a whisper.
"That's my son."
The room went completely still.
The woman in the gray suit's husband spun around.
"What did you just say?"
"Ryan." The old man's finger pressed gently against the photo.
"Ryan Walter.
Number seventeen.
That's my boy."
The man in the gray suit stepped closer, his voice dropping low and sharp.
"That's impossible.
Ryan has been g*ne for eight years.
There's no child.
We would have known."
The elderly man looked down at the little boy still clutching the glove.
The boy looked back up at him with wide, uncertain eyes.
"What's your name, son?"
The boy hesitated.
Then quietly — "Danny.
My mom said my dad loved baseball."
Something in the old man's face broke open.
The woman across the room pressed her hand harder over her mouth.
She knew something.
Everyone could see it.
Her eyes were darting toward the door like she was calculating how fast she could reach it.
Then the man in the gray suit grabbed her arm.
"How long have you known about this child?"
She didn't answer.
But her silence was louder than anything she could have said.
---
What she was hiding had been buried for eight years — and it was about to destroy everything.
