Chapter 1: The Clip He Wanted Back

"They tied me to an iron doorframe, and my husband tapped a small hammer against the bones in my foot, one beat at a time, while my mother-in-law asked, "Does it hurt yet?" and told him to h*t harder.
I was pregnant and screamed until my voice gave out.
A bone cracked, and my foot swelled so badly I couldn't even get a sandal on.
The hospital suspected deliberate @buse.
My sister got the clip my husband had posted in the family group chat, bragging that he was "teaching his wife a lesson."
When my sister came into my hospital room, she placed her phone beside me and said she had saved the clip before anything in the family chat could disappear.
She had also saved the post showing that it came from his account.
Then she asked me one question I had been avoiding since I arrived: "Are you going back with him?"
I looked at my swollen foot, then at my stomach.
Until that moment, part of me had still been thinking about getting through the next conversation without making him angrier.
I had spent so long measuring every word around him and his mother that even lying in a hospital bed, I was still trying to manage their reaction.
"No," I said.
My sister didn't celebrate.
She simply pulled her chair closer and asked me to say it again because my voice was barely there.
"I'm not going back."
That answer changed the room more than anything I had screamed while they had me tied up.
Hospital staff had already asked whether I felt safe.
This time, when they asked again, I stopped minimizing what had happened.
I told them my husband had used the hammer.
I told them my mother-in-law had been there telling him to continue.
I told them I was pregnant when they did it.
And when they asked whether I wanted my husband allowed into the room, I said no.
My sister kept the clip.
I kept answering questions.
Then her phone started buzzing.
The family group chat was changing.
The post containing the clip was gone.
A few messages around it had vanished too.
My sister showed me the screen without making me scroll through every relative's reaction.
She had already saved what mattered.
A minute later, my husband contacted her directly and demanded that she delete the video.
That was the first thing he cared about.
Not whether the baby was okay.
Not whether I could walk.
The clip.
My sister read his message once, locked her phone, and asked, "Do you want me to answer him?"
I shook my head.
"No.
Keep it."
He called me next.
I watched his name fill my screen until the call stopped.
Then it came again.
And again.
My mother-in-law called too.
I didn't answer either of them.
I wasn't ready to hear another explanation for something my body had already answered.
Then my sister's expression shifted.
She turned her phone toward herself, reading quickly.
"He knows I still have the clip," she said.
"And he says he's coming here."
For a second, the hospital room felt too small.
My hand moved over my belly while my sister stood up beside the bed.

But this time there was a door between him and me, and I was the one who got to decide whether it opened.
I looked at my sister and said, "Tell the front desk he does not come through that door."
