Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Desk

Daniel grabbed my arm the moment Dr.

Grant stepped away.

"You planned this," he said.

"You brought him here."

"I came for my own records," I said.

"You brought yourself."

Vanessa was still against the wall, one hand pressed to her stomach.

Her eyes moved between us, and for the first time since I had known her name, she looked frightened.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

"You told me she couldn't have children either.

You told me the problem was hers."

He didn't answer.

She pushed off the wall.

"You said the doctors confirmed it was her.

That's why you said we didn't need to—" She stopped.

I watched his silence do more damage than anything I could have said.

"He lied to both of us," I told her.

"But only one of us built a case around it."

I opened my bag and placed a single envelope on the reception desk between us.

Not for Daniel.

For Vanessa.

"That's a list of every hotel, every transfer, and the name of the man your company's board has been trying to reach for six months," I said.

"The one who has been quietly buying shares."

Daniel's face changed.

"You didn't," he said.

"I did," I said.

"Months ago."

My phone buzzed once.

I glanced at the screen.

It was a message from our company's senior attorney.

It read: *Board meeting confirmed.

Tomorrow.

He won't have a vote.*
