Chapter 2: The Voice Behind the Door

Laura leaned close to me.
“Samantha, we’re moving you to a protected room.
Don’t tell anyone—not even Brandon.”
Minutes later, security opened my old room.
I heard Evelyn gasp when she saw the empty bed.
“What have you done with her?” Brandon demanded.
My mother arrived just as they were escorted away.
She held my shaking hand and whispered, “You’re never going back to that house.”
Then Detective Harris called.
“We searched the kitchen,” he said.
“We found the rolling pin, but someone had wiped it clean.”
My stomach tightened.
“Then they’ll say I made everything up.”
“No,” he replied.
“Mrs.
Higgins saw Walter carrying a trash bag outside after the ambulance left.
Inside it, we found your broken phone.”
I froze.
Months earlier, I had hidden that phone above a kitchen cabinet and set it to record whenever Evelyn threatened me.
“Was anything saved?” I asked.
“There’s one audio file,” the detective said.
“It recorded what they said after you escaped.”
He paused, then added, “Samantha, Brandon mentioned another woman—and Evelyn ordered him to remove something from the basement before the police arrived.”
My mother’s grip tightened.
“What woman?” I whispered.
Before Detective Harris could answer, someone knocked on my protected-room door and called me by a name I had not used in four years.
