Chapter 2: The Voice on the Recording

Noah held up his phone.
“This morning, the school received a message saying my mother had given up her seat and would not be attending.”
My stomach tightened.
I had sent no such message.
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“This is ridiculous.
Noah, finish your speech.”
“No,” he replied.
“You told the usher my seat belonged to your family.
Then you sent me a text saying Mom had decided not to come.”
Every face turned toward Vanessa.
“I was trying to protect your graduation from unnecessary drama,” she snapped.
Mark finally rose.
“Vanessa, what did you do?”
She glared at him.
“Don’t pretend you didn’t know.”
The color drained from Mark’s face.
Before he could answer, the usher stepped into the aisle.
His hands were trembling around a folded sheet of paper.
“Sir, there’s something you need to see,” he said.
“The seating change was submitted from your email account.”
Mark stared at him.
“That’s impossible.
I never sent it.”
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
Then the principal reached for the microphone.
“The email wasn’t the only communication we received,” she said.
“Someone also called my office—and that conversation was recorded.”
Vanessa froze halfway out of her seat as the principal placed her phone beside the microphone and pressed PLAY.
