Chapter 2: The Glass That Slipped

The next evening started like any other.

Marin arrived early, tied her hair back, and pulled on her gloves before anyone could notice.

But Bernadette was already watching.

At 6:47 p.m., a glass broke in the private dining room.

Marin reached for the pieces too quickly.

Her glove slipped.

Celeste Whitlock saw it.

She didn't say a word.

She smiled.

Then she turned to the table of guests and said, loud enough for the room to hear — "That's the third time this week.

Some people simply aren't suited for this environment."

The table went quiet.

Marin kept her eyes down and cleaned up the glass.

Bernadette stepped forward.

"Miss Whitlock, it was an accident —"

"I didn't ask for your opinion, Bernadette."

Celeste set her wine glass down slowly.

"In fact, I've been meaning to speak to Rafael about staffing.

Some of these girls have been here too long.

They get…

comfortable."

Marin's hands had stopped moving.

One small cut on her finger.

A thin line of bl00d on the white tile.

She pressed her glove against it and said nothing.

But Bernadette had seen enough.

She walked directly to the house phone on the wall.

Her hand was shaking as she dialed.

What Bernadette said next — and what Rafael did the moment he heard it — is the part no one in that building will ever forget.
