Chapter 2: The Blanket in the Kennel

Part 2 ⬇️

When the child protection officer knelt down beside Emily, the little girl flinched.

Even a gentle hand reaching toward her made her pull back.

"Emily, you're safe now.

No one will hurt you here."

Emily said nothing.

She just stared at the floor and pressed her small arms against her sides.

The officer noticed something else.

A faded mark along Emily's jaw.

Old.

Healed over.

But unmistakable.

Back at the house, the stepmother had composed herself by the time officials arrived.

She smiled at the door.

Offered coffee.

Spoke calmly about how much she loved Emily.

But one of the officers walked past her toward the backyard.

The dog kennel was there.

Clean bedding inside.

A small blanket folded in the corner.

A child-sized blanket.

"Ma'am…

does Emily sleep out here?"

The stepmother's smile didn't move.

"That's the dog's blanket.

Emily just plays out there sometimes."

Then a neighbor appeared at the fence.

An older woman.

She had been watching.

"That child hasn't sl*pt inside that house in months," she said quietly.

"I've seen her out here.

In the cold.

I should have called sooner.

I'm so sorry."

The stepmother turned.

And for the first time, her composure cracked.

But Emily's father still hadn't come home.

And nobody could reach him.

That detail was about to change everything.
