Chapter 2: The Wrong Person Knows

She grabbed my wrist before I could respond.
"You don't understand what you've walked into," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"That boy was never supposed to survive tonight."
My legs went cold.
"What are you saying?" I managed.
She glanced back toward the ballroom doors, then pulled me further into the corridor.
"The cake wasn't meant for him," she said.
"It was switched.
Someone switched it at the last minute, and now the wrong person knows you saw it."
"Who switched it?" I asked.
"Who are you?"
She opened her mouth — then froze.
Behind me, slow footsteps echoed down the corridor.
I turned around.
The woman in white was standing at the far end of the hall.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't shaking.
She was completely calm, watching us both with an expression I couldn't read.
She looked at the woman in green and said, very quietly:
"I told you not to come tonight."
The woman in green let go of my wrist.
When I turned back, her face had changed completely.
Whatever courage she had a moment ago was gone.
"I'm sorry," she whispered — but I couldn't tell if she was speaking to me or to the woman in white.
Then I heard a sound that stopped everything.
A child's voice, somewhere back in the ballroom.
"Mama…
I don't feel well."
