Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Counter

Charlotte didn't fight back.
She let the socialite drag her.
Let her shout.
Let every guest in that lobby watch.
Because Charlotte knew something none of them did.
The socialite finally released her grip and stepped back, smoothing her white silk gown like she hadn't just humiliated a woman in front of a hundred people.
"Have security remove her," she said to the front desk manager.
"And make sure she never sets foot in this building again."
The manager reached for the phone.
Charlotte slowly stood up.
She didn't wipe the bl00d from her lip.
She didn't fix her hair.
She just reached into her bag and placed a single envelope on the front desk counter.
"Before you make that call," Charlotte said quietly, "you may want to open that."
The manager hesitated.
The socialite laughed.
"Don't touch it.
She's nobody.
Get her out."
But the manager had already seen the name printed on the front of the envelope.
His face went pale.
"Ma'am..." he said slowly, turning toward the socialite.
"I think you need to see this."
The socialite snatched the envelope.
Pulled out the document inside.
Her smile disappeared.
Her hand began to shake.
Because the name at the top of the legal ownership papers was not hers.
It had never been hers.
And now everyone in that lobby was watching her face fall apart.
