Chapter 2: The Document on the Desk

Charlotte didn't scream.
She didn't beg.
She pressed one hand against the cold marble floor and slowly pushed herself up.
The socialite — a woman named Vivienne Holt — stepped closer and grabbed her by the wrist.
"I said GET OUT.
Or do you want security to drag you out in front of everyone?"
Charlotte looked up at her calmly.
"Let go of my wrist, Vivienne."
Something in her voice made Vivienne pause.
Just for a second.
Then Vivienne laughed and turned to the watching crowd.
"Did you hear that?
She's telling ME what to do.
In MY hotel."
A few guests laughed nervously.
But one man near the front desk did not laugh.
He had gone completely still.
His face had turned pale the moment Charlotte stood up.
Because he recognized her.
He had spent three years making sure no one else ever would.
Charlotte's eyes found his across the lobby.
She said nothing.
She didn't need to.
She reached into the inside pocket of her jacket and pulled out a folded document.
She placed it on the front desk without looking away from him.
The lobby manager glanced down at the paper.
His expression changed instantly.
Vivienne noticed and spun around.
"What is that?
What does that say?"
The manager's voice came out barely above a whisper.
"Ma'am…
I think you need to read this."
