Chapter 2: What the Contract Said

Elena arrived within two minutes, still holding her clipboard.
She looked at my cheek and didn't say a word about it.
She didn't have to.
"Mrs.
Bennett," she said carefully.
"What do you need?"
I opened the contract and placed my finger on the authorization clause.
"The floral installation for the garden terrace hasn't been completed yet.
The second photography team hasn't checked in.
The late-night dessert station hasn't been set up.
And the car service for the send-off is still waiting on my confirmation call."
Elena glanced at the door, then back at me.
"That's correct."
"Then none of it moves forward until I say so."
She nodded once and stepped aside to make a call.
I sat on the small lounge chair and pressed a cool cloth to my cheek.
My hand had stopped shaking.
That surprised me.
Then the door opened.
It wasn't Elena who walked back in.
It was Nathan.
He looked at my face and something in him seemed to collapse.
"Mom, I—"
"Don't," I said quietly.
"She didn't mean it that way—"
"Nathan." I looked at him steadily.
"She sl@pped me in front of 250 people.
And you whispered her name."
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
"There's something else," I said.
"Something I found in the contract this morning that I haven't told you yet."
His face went pale in a way that had nothing to do with the sl@p.
He already knew what I was about to say.
---
What secret is hidden in that contract — and why does Nathan already look guilty?
