Chapter 4: Everything Arthur Built

The federal field office smelled of stale coffee and printer toner.

A junior agent met Maya at the door and walked her through two security checkpoints before leading her into a conference room where Daniel and Ethan were already standing over a laptop.

Ethan looked like he hadn't moved since she left the car.

"What's on it?" she asked.

Daniel turned the laptop toward her.

The screen showed a spreadsheet — columns of dates, names, amounts, and account numbers.

Hundreds of rows.

Some entries were highlighted in yellow by the federal analyst who had been working through it.

"This is a parallel ledger," Daniel said.

"It runs alongside Cole Capital's official accounts from 1998 to 2009."

Maya leaned closer.

"What does it show?"

"Every payment Arthur Vale made outside the company's formal structure.

Consulting fees to shell entities.

Retainers to individuals who never appeared on any payroll." Daniel pointed to a cluster of highlighted rows.

"Including three payments to a man named Keller.

2001, 2003, and 2007."

Maya straightened.

"What happened in 2001?"

"Martin Hale's accident."

"2003?"

"Your mother's formal termination from Cole Capital.

The one that went on her permanent record."

The room went very still.

"And 2007?"

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Ethan answered.

"My father's car crash."

Maya sat down.

The analyst, a woman in her thirties who had been quiet in the corner, spoke carefully.

"There's more.

Scroll down to the second tab."

Daniel clicked through.

A new set of records appeared.

These were correspondence logs — internal memos between Arthur Vale and Richard Sinclair, dated between 1999 and 2004.

Maya read the first one.

*R — Eleanor B.

has been contained.

The transfer records have been updated.

Her name is on all three.

If she pursues this, she pursues it alone.

— A*

Her hands went flat on the table.

"Contained," she said.

"Yes."

"He used that word."

"Yes."

She read the next entry.

*R — Martin is becoming a problem.

He has made copies.

Keller will handle the access issue.

Do not contact me again on this channel after Thursday.

— A*

"The access issue," Ethan said.

"Martin's accident."

"Yes."

Ethan pulled out a chair and sat down heavily.

"He wrote it down," he said.

"He actually wrote it down."

"People like Arthur Vale write things down," Daniel said.

"They believe their records will never be found.

The writing is how they keep control over the people beneath them.

Richard knew about these memos.

That's why he never fully turned on Arthur — Arthur had documentation of Richard's involvement too.

They were locked together."

Maya looked at the screen.

"My mother never knew any of this."

"No."

"She thought it was Richard.

Only Richard."

"Arthur made sure of that.

Richard was the visible face.

Arthur stayed in the background and let Richard absorb everything."

Maya thought about her mother in their third apartment, the one with the broken radiator, sitting at the kitchen table filling out job applications that never came back with offers.

She thought about the way Eleanor had stopped answering the phone after a while.

The way she had started checking the locks twice before bed.

She had been afraid of the wrong man.

"Where is Arthur now?" Maya asked.

The analyst answered.

"His assistant confirmed he's at his Manhattan residence.

He has a meeting scheduled at Cole Capital tomorrow at eight a.m." She paused.

"He doesn't know we have the drive."

Ethan looked up.

"He thinks tomorrow morning is still his."

"Yes."

Ethan stood.

"Then we go tonight."

Daniel shook his head.

"We don't go anywhere.

The federal team executes the warrant.

That's how this holds in court."

"I'm not going to sit here while—"

"Ethan." Daniel's voice was firm.

"If you walk into Arthur Vale's building tonight, his lawyers will have you removed and the case will have a complication it doesn't need.

Let the agents do their job."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

He looked at Maya.

She looked back at him.

"He's right," she said quietly.

Ethan pulled out his chair and sat back down.

The federal agent in charge stepped into the room.

"We're ready to move on the warrant.

We'll have agents at Vale's residence within the hour." He looked at the group.

"Nobody contacts him.

Nobody warns him.

Nobody moves until we confirm."

He left.

The room settled into a tense, waiting silence.

Maya looked at the memo on the screen again.

*Eleanor B.

has been contained.*

Her mother had spent fourteen years believing she had simply been unlucky.

That she had found something she shouldn't have, and powerful men had protected each other, and there was nothing to be done.

She had never known there was a name behind the name.

May you like

She had never known about Arthur Vale.

Maya was going to make sure everyone else did.
