Chapter 2: Page Fourteen

Julian set the papers down slowly.
Then he picked them up again, as if the words might change.
"This isn't possible," he said.
"It's all there," Sarah replied.
"Deed of ownership, original transfer date, your signature acknowledging the terms."
"I never signed anything that said—"
"Page fourteen," Sarah said quietly.
Julian turned to page fourteen.
His jaw tightened.
The townhouse had never been marital property.
My grandmother's estate attorney had structured the inheritance with a single condition — it could not be claimed, divided, or transferred by a spouse under any circumstance.
Julian had signed that acknowledgment on our wedding night, tucked inside a stack of documents he had barely glanced at.
He looked at me.
"You knew.
You've known this entire time."
"I've known since the morning you hung her photograph on my wall."
He pushed back from the table.
"Sterling House, then.
You can't touch Sterling House.
That's mine."
Sarah reached into her leather case a second time.
"Elena," she said, "would you like to explain, or shall I?"
I folded my hands on the table.
"Sterling House was built with my inheritance, Julian.
Every permit, every lease, every opening — I have the records."
The color left his face.
Then his phone lit up on the table.
Victoria's name on the screen.
And Julian did something I had never seen in nine years of marriage.
He didn't answer it.
