Chapter 2: He Said a Name

Charlotte looked me straight in the eye and said, "He left her."

"What do you mean he left her?"

"I was coming back from my car.

I saw Oliver carry Daisy into the elevator.

I got in behind him.

He rode down to the lobby, walked outside, put her down on the bench near the entrance—" she paused, "—and drove away."

The room tilted.

"He put a two-year-old on a bench.

Alone.

At night.

And left."

I grabbed the wall.

"She was crying," Charlotte said quietly.

"I sat with her until she stopped.

Then I brought her up to you."

I looked at Daisy.

She was still gripping Charlotte's jacket like she didn't want to let go.

"Where did he go?" My voice didn't sound like mine.

"I don't know.

But before he drove off—" Charlotte hesitated.

"He was on the phone.

He said a name.

A woman's name."

My chest went cold.

"What name?"

Charlotte opened her mouth.

Then my phone lit up on the counter.

It was Oliver.
