Chapter 2: You Have the Same Eyes

Part 2 ⬇️

The engine sound got louder.

Then a black truck appeared at the far end of the road, moving slow.

Like it was looking for something.

Or someone.

The biker turned to the man closest to him.

"Take her behind the bikes.

Now."

Lila didn't let go.

"Don't leave me," she said.

Her voice was so small it barely made a sound.

"I'm not going anywhere." He gently unhooked her fingers from his vest.

"But I need you to hide.

Can you do that for me?"

She looked up at him — really looked at him — and whispered, "You have the same eyes."

He went completely still.

"What did you say?"

"My mom showed me a picture once." Lila's chin trembled.

"She said if I was ever really scared…

to find you."

The truck had stopped about two hundred yards away.

The door opened.

A man stepped out slowly, like he had all the time in the world.

One of the bikers moved up beside him and spoke low.

"You know him?"

He didn't answer right away.

Because he did know him.

And the moment he recognized that face, he understood why this little girl had been running.

He understood something else too.

Something that made his chest feel like it was caving in.

"Get her out of sight," he said quietly.

"And nobody touches their phone."
