Chapter 2: The Document He Never Wanted Her to See
Emily didn't wait for his response.
She pushed through the conference room door and didn't look back.
Margaret caught up with her in the hallway.
"Emily.
Stop.
Just breathe."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine.
You just gave away seven years."
Emily stopped walking.
Her hand pressed flat against the wall.
"I gave away nothing," she said quietly.
"He took it."
Margaret was silent for a moment.
Then she reached into her briefcase and pulled out a single folded document.
"There's something you need to know.
I didn't show you this before because I didn't want to affect your decision." She held it out.
"Blake filed to have your name removed from Carson Meridian's founding records.
Officially.
Permanently."
Emily stared at the paper.
"He did it six months ago."
Six months.
While they were still married.
"He was planning this," Emily said.
"Yes."
The elevator doors opened at the end of the hall.
Blake stepped out.
He stopped when he saw them.
His eyes dropped to the document in Emily's hand.
Something crossed his face.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Calculation.
"Margaret," he said carefully.
"That was meant to be confidential."
Margaret didn't move.
"She had a right to know."
Blake took one slow step forward.
"Emily.
Put that down and let's talk like adults."
Emily looked at the document.
Then at him.
"You erased me."
He said nothing.
"You erased me while I was still your wife."
