Chapter 2: They Were Building a Story Before I Left the Parking Lot

PART 2 ⬇️
My phone started ringing before I even got back to Lily's room.
Mom.
Mom.
Mom.
Mom.
Four calls in six minutes.
I let them all go.
Then Carla.
I let that go too.
When my father called, I picked up.
"You filed a report." It wasn't a question.
"Yes."
"Naomi." His voice dropped low.
"Do you understand what you've done to this family?"
"Do you understand what was done to Lily?"
Silence.
Then: "Your sister made a mistake.
That's all this was."
"She used a skewer, Dad."
More silence.
"We were going to handle it privately."
I almost laughed.
"Handle it.
Like you handled everything else."
He didn't answer that.
When I hung up, my hands were shaking.
An hour later, my mother texted.
One line.
*Carla is saying Lily grabbed the skewer first.*
I read it three times.
Then I walked back into Lily's room and looked at my daughter.
Her leg in a brace.
Her face still pale.
A coloring book open on her lap that she hadn't touched.
"Mom?" she said.
"Is Grandpa mad at me?"
I sat down beside her.
"No, baby."
But I was already thinking about what my mother's text really meant.
They weren't just protecting Carla.
They were building a story.
And they had started before I even left the hospital parking lot.
