Chapter 2: The Name on the Phone

Leah pressed her back against the cold metal shelving and covered her son's face with her hand, terrified he would make a sound.
Through the door, she could hear Doreen's voice, calm and certain, the way it always was when she had already decided something.
"The doctor has the paperwork ready.
We just need Nathan to sign."
A pause.
Then Nathan spoke.
"What if she fights it?"
"She can't fight anything from a psychiatric hold, sweetheart.
That's the point."
Leah's legs nearly gave out.
She looked down at her son.
He was still sleeping.
Tiny fists curled against his chest.
*They planned this before he was even born.*
Mae appeared at the supply room door thirty seconds later.
Her face was tight.
"We have maybe four minutes," Mae whispered.
"There's a social worker coming up from the second floor.
Doreen called her this morning."
"A social worker?
Why?"
Mae hesitated.
"They filed a report.
They're claiming you're unstable.
That you've been making threats."
Leah stared at her.
"I never made any threats."
"I know." Mae pressed something cold into Leah's palm.
A phone.
"There's one person who can stop this.
But you have to call her before that paperwork is signed."
Leah looked at the screen.
The name already pulled up was Dr.
Celia Rusk.
The same doctor who had admitted her.
The same doctor who had said Doreen's name before Nathan's.
