Chapter 2: The Timestamp That Changed the Number

The father didn't shout.

That was the part that scared everyone.

He just stood very still, holding the phone, watching the video play a second time.

The little girl had stopped shaking, but she wouldn't let go of the nanny's arm.

Finally, he looked up.

"Vanessa.

Why was she in there?"

Vanessa's expression shifted — not to guilt, but to something colder.

"You're going to believe a child's phone over me?

I've been in this house for two years."

"Answer the question."

"She was being difficult.

I needed her to calm down.

It was thirty seconds."

The nanny's breath caught.

The boy who had played the video looked at his father.

"Dad.

It wasn't thirty seconds."

Vanessa turned on him fast.

"You stay out of this."

But the boy didn't flinch.

"I have the timestamp."

The room went completely silent.

Because thirty seconds and what that video actually showed…

were not the same number.

And then the father's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed in a way no one in that room had ever seen before.

He stepped out of the kitchen to answer it.

And when he came back, he wasn't looking at Vanessa anymore.

He was looking at the nanny.

"How long have you known?" he asked quietly.
