Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen
Her Husband stepped forward.
"Dad, you don't understand what goes on in this house—"
"Don't call me that."
The Father's voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
He turned to his daughter.
She was shaking, one hand pressed against her stomach.
"How long?" he asked.
She couldn't answer.
Her eyes moved to her Husband.
Then to her Mother-in-Law.
That was answer enough.
The Mother-in-Law straightened.
"She's dramatic.
She bruises easily.
Ask any doctor."
"Which doctor?" the Father said.
"The one whose questions your son answers for her?"
Silence.
Then the Pregnant Wife said something so quietly the room almost missed it.
"There's another notebook.
In the bedroom.
He doesn't know I kept it."
Her Husband's head turned slowly.
"What did you just say?"
She didn't repeat it.
She didn't have to.
Her Father was already moving toward the hallway.
Her Husband moved to block him.
The two men stood face to face.
And then a phone on the counter lit up.
The name on the screen stopped everyone cold.
It wasn't a family member.
It was the name of her doctor.
