Chapter 2: The Name on the Documents

Grant called four times before I reached the lobby.
I didn't answer.
The fifth time, I picked up and put him on speaker so my attorney, Daniel, could hear every word.
"Elena, whatever you think you're doing, stop.
You are embarrassing yourself."
"I haven't done anything yet, Grant."
"Come home.
We can talk about this like adults."
"You sl\*pped me in front of your entire family this morning.
There is nothing to talk about."
A pause.
Then his voice dropped.
"You signed a prenup.
You have nothing."
I looked at Daniel.
He almost smiled.
"I know what I signed," I said.
"Do you?"
He went quiet for the first time.
I ended the call.
What Grant didn't know was that Daniel had spent eleven months building the file sitting inside those three black cases.
Altered safety records.
Payments routed through shell companies.
A warehouse incident in 2019 that had been quietly buried — and the employee who reported it, let go the following week.
That employee had signed a statement.
So had two others.
As we stepped into the elevator, Daniel's phone buzzed.
He read the message and turned to me.
"The FDA contact confirmed.
They've been waiting for this package for six months."
I nodded.
The elevator doors opened onto the fourteenth floor.
And standing at the reception desk, pale as paper, was Paige.

She had no idea I had seen her name on those documents.
But the look on her face told me she was starting to figure it out.
