Chapter 2: The Name on the Second Company

"Are you ready?" my lawyer asked again.
I watched Noah laugh at something my sister said.
He had Daniel's jawline and my mother's eyes.
He had never once asked why his father never came.
"Yes," I said.
"File everything."
By noon, the enforcement order had been submitted.
The restaurant's equipment — the imported ovens, the walk-in coolers, the custom bar Daniel had bragged about in every interview — was now listed as collateral subject to seizure.
I didn't celebrate.
I made lunch for Noah and helped him with his reading.
That evening, my phone lit up.
It was a number I didn't recognize.
I almost ignored it.
"Claire." The voice was low.
Careful.
"This is Marcus.
I managed Daniel's accounts for three years.
I left six months ago."
I sat down slowly.
"He knows you filed," Marcus said.
"He's been moving assets since this morning.
There's a second business.
It's not in his name."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Whose name is it in?"
A long pause.
"Your son's."
