Chapter 2: The Call in the Rain

My hands began to shake only after the estate vanished from view.

The driver glanced at me through the mirror.

“Mr.

Vance asked me to tell you the emergency board meeting is set for nine tomorrow.”

“Did Eleanor receive the notice?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

My phone rang before he finished speaking.

Julian’s name flashed across the screen.

“Leah, what did you take from the safe?”

“My property.”

“My mother says the folder contains company records.”

“Then your mother should have read the agreements before signing them.”

He went silent.

“What agreements?”

Before I could answer, another call appeared.

It was Arthur Vance.

“Leah, we have a problem,” he said.

“Someone accessed the company server after you left.”

“Who?”

“Eleanor’s office.

They searched for every contract bearing your signature.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did they find the original ownership schedule?”

“No—but they found something else.

Julian has called an emergency vote to remove you before the board learns who actually controls the Rhodes family shares.”

Then Arthur lowered his voice.

“And Leah…

one director has already agreed to help him.

It’s the last person you would expect.”
