Chapter 2: The Second Signature

Part 2 ⬇️
The officer spread the folder open on the hood of his car.
I looked down.
My name was on the deed.
But there was a second signature beneath mine.
One I had never written.
"That's a forgery," I said.
The officer looked at me.
"Do you recognize the signature?"
I did.
It was Mason's handwriting.
Copying mine.
Teresa stopped screaming.
For the first time all evening, she went completely quiet.
Then she looked at Mason and said three words very slowly.
"You told me it was ready."
Mason's face went white.
"It was supposed to be notarized next week," he said.
"Before Connor found out."
I couldn't breathe.
They hadn't just planned to take the house.
They had already started the paperwork.
Then one of the officers walked over holding something else from the folder.
A document I didn't recognize.
He asked me if I had ever signed a power of attorney giving Teresa full control of my finances.
I had not.
But my signature was on it.
Dated three months ago.
The same month I started sending her three thousand dollars.
Amy grabbed my arm from the passenger seat.
She had been listening through the open car window.
"Connor," she whispered.
"There's something else.
Something I never told you."
Her hands were shaking.

What did Amy know — and why did she stay silent?
