Chapter 2: What the Oak Tree Was Keeping

PART 2 ⬇️
The old oak tree still had the hollow we used as children, sealed now with a rusted tin box.
Inside was a folded document, a burner phone, and a photograph.
The photograph showed Emily in a hospital bed.
Her face was bruised.
The date stamped on the back was three days before Ryan told me she had d*ed.
The burner phone had one saved message.
*James, if you found this, he knows I tried to leave.
Don't let him near Lily.*
I drove straight back to the police station.
The detective I spoke to listened without interrupting.
When I showed him the photograph, he went quiet for a long moment.
Then he told me something that stopped me cold.
"Mr.
Carter, a woman matching your sister's description filed a report under a different name seven months ago.
She withdrew it the next morning.
We assumed she changed her mind."
I stared at him.
"Where is she now?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and his expression shifted.
He looked at me.
"That's the hospital calling."

What James found out next will break your heart — and expose everything Ryan fought to keep buried.
