Chapter 2: Only for You, Maya

I sat in that parking lot for a long time, staring at the screen.

The balance was $284,000.

I hadn't put it there.

I hadn't even known the account was still active.

And then I saw the name attached to the last deposit.

*Grandma Ruth.*

She had been g*ne for three years.

My hands were shaking as I scrolled through the transaction history.

Monthly transfers, going back years.

Small amounts at first.

Then larger ones.

All from her personal account.

All sent quietly, with no explanation — except for one.

The final transfer had a note attached.

Four words.

*"Only for you, Maya."*

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

Grandma Ruth had known.

She had watched what this family did to me, year after year, and she had said nothing out loud.

But she had been building something for me in silence.

Then a second notification appeared.

A voicemail.

Left the same night she passed away.

I hadn't seen it until now.

My finger hovered over the play button.

And then my phone rang.

It was Chloe.

I stared at her name on the screen.

She never called me.

Not once in the last two years unless she needed something.

Why was she calling now — at this hour — less than thirty minutes after I walked out?

---

What Chloe said next stopped Maya cold.
