Chapter 2: What He Signed in October

She stared at those two messages for a long time.

Megan hadn't sent them out of guilt.

There was no apology in either one.

She had sent them because she wanted the widow to know that Robert was the one who had started all of this — and that Megan had simply followed his lead.

The widow called Robert the next morning.

He answered on the third ring, his voice flat and careful.

"What did you sign in October?" she asked.

Silence.

"Robert."

"It wasn't what you think."

"Then tell me what it was."

He exhaled slowly.

"A letter of intent.

With a developer.

It wasn't legally binding.

It was just…

exploratory."

The widow's hand tightened around the phone.

"You signed a document about my house.

Without asking me.

Without telling me."

"Mom, nothing was finalized —"

"You put my home on paper with a developer."

He said nothing.

"How long has this been planned?"

Another silence.

Then, quietly: "Megan found the contact.

But I was the one who made the call."

The widow set the phone down on the kitchen table without ending the call.

Through the window, she could see the sunroom.

The one Megan wanted gone.

The one Henry had built with his own hands the summer before he got sick.

Robert's voice came through the speaker, small and distant.

"Mom.

Are you still there?"

She was.

But something had just shifted in a way that could not be undone.
