Chapter 2: The Name on the Document

⬇️ PART 2 ⬇️

The scream came from Evelyn.

She collapsed back into the pew, one hand pressed to her chest, staring at Jonathan like she was seeing a ghost.

Because for twelve years, she had told herself he was gone.

Jonathan didn't look at his mother.

He looked at Daniel.

"I didn't choose to disappear," he said.

"I was told to."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"What does that mean?"

Jonathan glanced at Charles.

Something passed between them — not warmth.

Recognition.

The kind that carries old pain.

"Dad came to me twelve years ago.

He said the company was going to collapse.

That if I stayed, we'd all go down." Jonathan paused.

"He said the only way to save the family was if I didn't exist anymore."

The chapel was completely still.

"So he gave me a number, a new name, and a flight to Montreal." Jonathan's jaw tightened.

"And then he kept using mine."

Daniel turned to Charles.

"You told me he d*ed in a car accident."

Charles said nothing.

"You made me gr*eve him.

You made me speak at a memorial service—"

"Daniel." Charles's voice was low.

Controlled.

"This is not the place."

"Then where?" Daniel stepped toward him.

"Where exactly is the place, Dad?"

That was when Rebecca Sloan stepped forward and placed a second document on the altar rail.

I hadn't seen that one before either.

She looked at me.

"There's something else, Claire.

Something we found this morning."

My stomach dropped.

"It involves your father."
