Chapter 2: The Document in His Pocket

Part 2 ⬇️
Vanessa yanked her ankle free and took one step back.
"Do you know who I am?" she hissed, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear.
"You're a maid.
You clean floors.
You don't put your hands on me."
Naomi said nothing.
She simply straightened her uniform and waited.
That silence made Vanessa angrier than any argument could have.
"Someone remove her," Vanessa said, turning toward the nearest security guard.
"Right now.
I want her gone before the photographer finishes."
Nobody moved.
Then a voice came from the back of the ballroom.
"Vanessa."
Ethan Whitmore was walking toward them through the crowd, his face unreadable.
He had seen everything from across the room.
Every guest watched him cross the floor.
He stopped between the two women and looked at Vanessa for a long moment.
Then he turned to Naomi and said quietly, "Are you all right?"
The room went still again — but this time it felt different.
Vanessa's smile disappeared completely.
"Ethan, she grabbed me—"
"I saw what happened," he said.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
What no one in that ballroom knew yet — what even Naomi didn't know — was that Ethan had been carrying a folded document in his jacket pocket for three days, waiting for the right moment.
He reached inside his jacket now.
---
What's in that document — and why has Ethan been waiting three days to use it?
