The doctor's hands went still the moment he understood what he was looking at.

"She did this…

herself?" he said quietly.

"Out there alone?"

The senior nurse leaned in close and whispered, "The larvae are only in the infected tissue.

They haven't touched the healthy skin.

Not a single one."

The room went silent.

Sarah grabbed the nearest arm she could reach.

"My baby," she rasped.

"Please.

Just tell me she's still alive."

The ultrasound wand moved across her stomach.

Nobody spoke.

The seconds stretched out like hours.

Then — a heartbeat.

Small.

Steady.

Strong.

Sarah broke down completely.

But as the team worked to stabilize her, one of the nurses noticed something tucked inside Sarah's medical bag.

A folded envelope, edges soft from water damage.

A name written on the front in faded ink.

Margaret.

The nurse set it gently on the side table without a word.

Nobody knew what was inside that envelope.

Nobody knew that Sarah had been carrying it for sixteen years.

And nobody in that room could have guessed that the letter would not just change things between Sarah and her mother —

It would expose a secret Margaret had buried the same day Sarah walked out the door.
