Chapter 6: The Voice Behind the Locked Door

Miriam stepped between me and the officers.

“No one is taking my client anywhere without examining the evidence.”

Marcus smiled.

“Your client admitted the pendant came from Eleanor Caldwell.”

“She said it came from her mother.”

Vanessa pointed at me.

“She changed Eleanor’s surname to hide the theft.”

I held out my wrists.

“If I stole it, prove when and where.”

The younger officer hesitated.

“Mrs.

Caldwell says it disappeared from the estate collection last month.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“That pendant hasn’t been inside this house for twenty-three years.”

“And you can prove that?” Marcus asked.

A voice came from the staircase.

“I can.”

The older guest from the luncheon descended slowly, one hand on the rail.

Vanessa stared at her.

“Mrs.

Pembroke, why are you still here?”

“You told your driver to take the other guests home.

You forgot I was in the conservatory calling my daughter.”

Mrs.

Pembroke opened her handbag and removed her phone.

“I photographed Grace when she served coffee because the resemblance to Eleanor startled me.

The pendant is around her neck.”

The officer studied the time stamp.

“This was taken before Mrs.

Caldwell claims the heirloom disappeared.”

Vanessa’s cheeks reddened.

“A photograph can be altered.”

“So can a laboratory report,” Miriam said.

The officers exchanged a glance.

The older one closed his notebook.

“This appears to be a civil dispute.

Miss Miller is not coming with us tonight.”

Vanessa spun toward Marcus.

“You said this would work.”

Marcus stepped away from her.

“I said it would work if your facts were accurate.”

Richard lifted his phone.

“There’s something else.”

He tapped the screen, and security footage appeared.

Vanessa entered Arthur’s study three weeks earlier, opened the sealed cabinet, and removed the photograph and Eleanor’s file.

Vanessa reached for the phone.

“Turn that off.”

Richard held it beyond her reach.

“You hid the photograph in your room.

You read the trust.

Then you arranged the false test.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because this family needed someone willing to defend it.”

“From my granddaughter?”

“From a stranger who could take everything.”

I faced Richard.

“Did you know she searched the study?”

“No.

The system stored the recording online after she disabled the camera.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“And you expect Grace to trust you?

Tell her the rest.”

Richard went still.

I looked at him.

“What rest?”

Vanessa’s smile sharpened.

“Richard knew where Eleanor was for three years.”

Arthur seized the back of a chair.

“Is that true?”

“I found a mailing address,” Richard said.

“By the time I went there, Eleanor had moved.”

“You never told me.”

“You had said you wanted her forgotten.”

“I was angry, not heartless!”

Richard’s voice cracked.

“How was I supposed to know the difference?”

The room fell silent.

I looked from uncle to grandfather.

“My mother waited for this family, and both of you chose fear.”

Richard nodded.

“You’re right.”

Miriam’s phone rang.

She answered and put it on speaker.

“This is Dr.

Patel at Commonwealth Genetics.

The verified comparison is complete.”

Vanessa gripped Marcus’s sleeve.

Dr.

Patel continued, “Arthur Caldwell is Grace Miller’s biological grandfather.

The probability exceeds 99.9 percent.”

Arthur’s hand covered his mouth.

“Grace,” he whispered.

“Don’t call me anything yet.”

Miriam opened the scorched envelope.

“There is one more truth.”

She removed a letter and unfolded it.

“Eleanor left a sworn statement explaining why she disappeared.”

Arthur sank into the chair.

May you like

Miriam looked directly at him.

“She named the person who forced her to choose between this house and her baby.”
