The room went completely still.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Her eyes dropped to the necklace in Richard's hand, then snapped back to me.
"That's ridiculous," she said.
"She's a maid.
She has nothing to do with this family."
But her voice had changed.
The cruelty was gone.
What replaced it was something I had never seen on her face before.
Fear.
Richard's hands were still shaking.
He looked at the groundskeeper.
"Walter.
How long have you known?"
The old man lowered his eyes.
"Since the day she arrived, sir.
The moment I saw her face."
"And you said nothing?"
Walter glanced at Vanessa.
Just for a second.
But that one look said everything.
Richard turned to his wife slowly.
"Vanessa."
She took a step back.
"Don't look at me like that."
"Did you know who she was when you hired her?"
The silence that followed was longer than it should have been.
Then Vanessa lifted her chin and said, "You can't prove anything."
I stood there with my hair on the floor around me, holding the broken chain, trying to understand what my life had actually been.
Then Richard's phone rang.
He looked at the screen and went pale.
"It's my father."
